Landmark Group Partners with humanitarian organisations across GCC to support most vulnerable communities during Ramadan
In the UAE, Landmark Group is partnering with the UNHCR, The UN Refugee Agency to contribute to its Ramadan fundraising campaign #EverySecondCounts
Landmark Group, the region’s leading retail and hospitality conglomerate, today announced that it is partnering with leading humanitarian and charitable organisations in the GCC region during the Holy Month of Ramadan to bring succor to populations in need as the world continues to navigate post-pandemic recovery.
Landmark Group’s popular brands including Centrepoint, Babyshop, Splash, SHOEMART, Lifestyle, Max, Shoexpress, Home Centre, Home Box, and Emax, will undertake a donation drive in-store and online, with all proceeds being allocated to the multiple charities that have been selected as partners this year.
In the UAE, Landmark Group is partnering with the UNHCR, The UN Refugee Agency to contribute to its Ramadan campaign ‘#EverySecondCounts. UNHCR has been working on the protection of refugees for 70 years, in 135 countries around the world. Today, 79.5 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced, with COVID-19 further exacerbating the situation. Every year, UNHCR appeals to the public during the month of giving and generosity to help raise funds for refugees and internally displaced families in need. ‘Every Second Counts’ is UNHCR’s third global Ramadan campaign, and focuses on the incredible impact individuals can create within seconds, in the lives of refugee and displaced families whose lives turned upside down within moments and have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety . The campaign aims to raise funds, through donations including Zakat and Sadaqah, to help provide lifesaving support such as shelter, food, clean water and monthly cash assistance, to the most vulnerable refugee and internally displaced families from Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Nigeria, countries of the Sahel, and Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
Speaking about the challenging situation for refugees, Houssam Chahine, UNHCR’s Chief of Private Sector Partnerships in MENA said, “At UNHCR, we are committed to making a difference in the lives of displaced families, to ensure they have access to the basic needs, such as food, clean water, a roof over their heads and medicine for their children. The socio-economic impact of COVID-19 has pushed more forcibly displaced populations into deepening poverty with the loss of livelihood opportunities and income, leading to increasing levels of food insecurity and malnourishment. Worldwide, 80 per cent of displaced people are in areas affected by malnutrition and acute food insecurity and more than 70% of refugees can only meet half or less of their basic needs, forcing families to make difficult choices, with cutting spending on food being the top negative coping mechanism of 51% of households.”
Adding, “in times like this, we are grateful for the support received from the Landmark Group brands in raising funds to help improve living conditions of thousands of refugees, and we look forward to establishing an impactful long-term partnership, bringing awareness and aid to those most in need.”
Speaking on the rollout of the Group’s GCC-wide Ramadan campaigns and partnership with UNHCR in UAE, Nisha Jagtiani, Group Director, Landmark Group, said: “By supporting UNHCR, we aim to raise awareness and funds for the critical humanitarian work they do in response to crises and supporting refugee families whose lives have been torn apart by war or violence. The Landmark Group has partnered with humanitarian organizations across the region to roll out GCC-wide fund-raising initiatives as part of the Group’s CSR objective to support the least privileged segments of our society.
In Saudi Arabia, Landmark Arabia’s brands including Centrepoint, Babyshop, Splash, SHOEMART, Lifestyle, Max, Shoexpress, Home Centre and Home Box will collaborate with Et’aam for the second year in a row to undertake a donation drive in-store and online, with all proceeds being allocated to ensure free food supplies reach the most vulnerable communities in need. Customers making purchases can add SAR5, SAR10, SAR 20 or SAR50 to their receipts and contribute to the Et’aam food bank.
In Oman, the Group will collaborate with Al Rahma Association for Motherhood and Childhood, a non-profit established in 2005 and supported by the societal development committee at Wilayat Alseeb, to deliver food packets and financial support as well as essentials to some of the thousands of low-income families registered with the Association.
In Bahrain, Landmark Group is partnering with Child’s Wish Society, officially launched in 2012 as an association under Bahrain’s Ministry of Labor and Social Development. Run with a mission to shape a cohesive society and instill a culture of generosity, giving, and social responsibility through financial and moral support for children in need.
In Qatar, Landmark Group is partnering with Qatar Charity, an international charity organization established in 1992 for the development and sustainability of needy communities across the globe. The Group have joined hands with the humanitarian organization to help support the families and children of blue-collar workers in the country.
As part of its ongoing CSR activations, Landmark Group led several private sector COVID-19 relief efforts across the GCC region last year at the peak of the pandemic, some of them with the entities it is partnering with on the current Ramadan campaigns.
