Dubai , Baku , (January 19, 2021): Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Dubai pay tribute to the martyrs of the ‘Black January’ tragedy by remembering them on its 31st Anniversary.
Thirty-one years have passed since January 20, 1990, which the Azerbaijani people dubbed as one of the worst crimes in the history of civilization pursuant to a state of emergency during the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Dubai, H.E Javidan Huseynov said, “The memories of the ‘Black January’ which have demonstrated the firmness of the Azerbaijani people’s will and determination will long be remembered,”
More than 25,000 heavily armed Soviet soldiers have been sent to Baku and assault citizens demonstrating against violations of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and demanding independence. Mass arrests accompanied the illegal deployment of troops and subsequent military interventions. As a result of the January tragedy, casualties included 131 civilians and 744 more were wounded in Baku and nearby regions. Among these includes women, children, the elderly, medical employees and policemen.
National leader, Heydar Aliyev dubbed the misfortune as a violation of law, democracy and of humanity — a day after the tragic event when he visited the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Moscow. He further described the January tragedy as an assault to the Azerbaijani people’s soverign rights. He highlighted that the terrible event was caused greatly by the political leadership of the Soviet Union during the session of the Milli Majilis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on January 20, 1990.
“Thirty one years after, thousands of people still pay tribute to the memories of the martyrs dear to their hearts at the Alley of Martyrs and offeredd their prayers. This year, I encourage every Azerbaijani to offer a moment of silence to commemorate the martyrs on this tragic day which we will forever remember,” he concluded.
